Taiwan has become Australia’s fifth-largest trading partner and fourth-largest export market. Its economy is expected to grow 3 per cent in 2024, over double Australia’s rate. At a lively, well-organised election in January, Taiwan’s voters kept the DPP government in power, under incoming President William Lai, while pragmatically constraining it by electing a parliament where legislation requires negotiation. Its middle-class population is similar to Australia’s, its tech sector that dominates chip-making is world-leading, and it is eager to boost trade and investment with Australia.
Australia-Taiwan Business Council Ltd (ATBC), Confederation of Asia-Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CACCI) and Australia-Taiwan Club (ATC) are hosting a cocktail-hour reception where guests can network, ask questions about business opportunities, and learn from brief presentations including the distinguished expert on Taiwan and China, Professor John Fitzgerald, who has recently returned from a semester as a Visiting Scholar at National Chengchi University, Taiwan.
